Why Real Recruiters Still Beat AI at Finding Great Talent.

Why Real Recruiters Still Beat AI at Finding Great Talent.

Back to Blogs

At Vertrou Outsourcing, we are having more and more conversations with firms saying they do not need sourcers, or they are using AI sourcing tools to supplement their recruitment teams. Fair, we get that AI’s changed recruitment, and there’s no denying it. It can search thousands of profiles, spot potential matches, help write outreach, and take away much of the repetitive work recruiters and sourcers deal with every day.

And honestly, that’s a good thing.

But there’s a big difference between finding candidates and finding great talent. That’s where real sourcers still have a huge advantage.

Exceptional candidates don’t always have exceptional CVs.

Let’s just cut straight to the point here: some people are brilliant at what they do but aren’t great at writing CVs. Some haven’t updated theirs in years. Others use completely different terminology from the job description or simply don’t list every skill they’ve worked with.

A good human sourcer gets that.

People aren’t keywords

A CV’s only a snapshot of someone’s career. It doesn’t always show what they’re actually capable of.

Two candidates can have completely different job titles and CVs but have very similar experience. One might be a Systems Administrator, another a Cloud Engineer, yet both could’ve spent years managing cloud infrastructure, automation and deployments. That second candidate could be exceptional. But if the search relies too heavily on keywords, they may never make the shortlist.

What’ve they actually done? What’ve they achieved? What kind of environment have they worked in? Have they taken on responsibilities that aren’t reflected in their job title? Could their experience transfer?

Those questions matter.

AI’s getting better at understanding context, but human curiosity is still incredibly valuable. Sometimes you need someone to look at a profile and think, “This isn’t a perfect match, but there’s something here.” That instinct can lead you to some of the best candidates.

Great sourcing isn’t about ticking every box

Recruitment can become far too focused on the perfect checklist.

5 years’ experience. A particular qualification. A specific technology. A particular job title. Experience in a certain industry.

The problem is that some of the best candidates don’t fit neatly into that checklist.

Maybe they’ve got 4 years’ experience instead of 5. Maybe they’ve worked with a similar technology. Maybe they’ve learned the required skills on the job but never added them to their CV. Maybe their current job title doesn’t reflect what they actually do.

A good sourcer doesn’t immediately reject those people.

They investigate. They look at the career journey, projects, and transferable skills. They speak to the candidate and find out what sits behind the CV.

And sometimes they find someone who’s a far better fit than the person who matched every keyword.

The candidate who almost got missed

This is where human sourcing can make a real difference.

Imagine finding a candidate whose profile doesn’t look perfect. The job title’s not quite right. A few keywords are missing. Their CV isn’t particularly polished.

But something catches your eye.

You look at their previous roles and projects and realise they’ve spent years doing something very similar to what the hiring manager needs.

So you reach out.

You have a conversation.

Suddenly, the candidate who looked like an average match on paper has exactly the experience the company needs.

They just didn’t describe it in the way the search expected.

That’s what I worry about when recruitment becomes too dependent on automated matching: the candidates who never make it into the search.

AI isn’t the enemy

This isn’t about saying AI has no place in recruitment. It absolutely does.

AI can be incredibly useful for sourcers. It can help with initial searches, explore larger talent pools, and take away repetitive tasks that can eat up hours of a recruiter’s day.

The technology can make a good sourcer faster.

But that doesn’t mean it makes the sourcer unnecessary.

The best approach is to use AI as a tool, not as the entire sourcing strategy.

Let technology help with the volume and searching. Let the human do the thinking, questioning, and connecting the dots.

Because finding 100 people who match a search is one thing.

Finding the one person who’s actually going to be brilliant in the role is something else entirely.
